Most damaging to arable crops including wheat (Triticum), maize (Zea), rice (Oryza) and oats (Avena). Can also infest fodder crops.
Larval feeding on leaves results in entire leaf removal, including the veins. In barley, wheat and rice the panicles, flower anthers and seed heads can be entirely severed. During the grain filling stage mature larvae can sever panicles at their base resulting in bending or severed seed heads falling to the ground. Larvae often move in rows that are 15-20 m wide to search for food during the night
